How Hammarby built a winning culture through data and passion

Hammarby has never lacked identity. A working-class club from Södermalm, carried by fans who didn't just attend matches but shaped the atmosphere. They were the first in Sweden to sing in the stands during the 1970s, brought samba drums to the 1982 final, and built one of Scandinavian football's most passionate supporter cultures. When Hammarby opened their new stadium in 2013, it marked more than an infrastructure upgrade. It signaled ambition, a club ready to compete at the top level with long-term planning and professional structure.

The data revolution

In recent years, Hammarby partnered with analytics firm Twelve to embed data throughout their operations. David Sumpter from Twelve joined the staff for a period, while the club hired Adrian von Heijne to lead their performance analysis work.

"We didn't bring in data to decorate decisions," von Heijne explains. "We brought it in to make better ones earlier and together."

The shift involved creating shared frameworks across coaching, recruitment, and youth development, common language around player profiles, clear performance indicators, and regular analysis rhythms that made data review routine rather than occasional.

Silverware returns to Södermalm

The results speak for themselves. Since deepening their analytics approach, Hammarby have won the men's cup, the women's cup, and the women's league title. The men have finished second in the league two seasons running—their best performances in over two decades.

Both the men's and women's sides have stabilized as genuine title contenders, combining the club's traditional passion with modern professionalism. The infrastructure is clearly stronger, with improved processes across all levels of the organization.

The title challenge ahead

Among supporters, the saying goes: "Next year it's damn well happening"—usually delivered with a knowing smile and growing confidence. For Hammarby fans, that hope is now backed by tangible progress: trophies won, consistent performances, and a club operating at its highest level in years.
